Abstract

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of audiovisual imagery on performance in the conditions of high and low kinesthetic imagery ability. The participants were 42 novice students who after assessing visual, auditory kinesthetic imagery ability, were randomly divided into four groups of visual-low kinesthetic imaging ability, visual-high kinesthetic imagery ability, audiovisual-low kinesthetic imagery ability, audiovisual-high kinesthetic imagery ability groups. To create audiovisual pattern, the angular velocity of the shoulder joint of a skilled person in the badminton long serve was converted into sound and matched to the visual pattern. The subjects participated in four practice sessions of 40 attempts, and then retention and transfer tests were performed after 48 hours. To record the performance accuracy, Scott and Fox standard test was used. Factor Analysis was employed to compare the groups in the test stages. The results showed that the performance of the audiovisual-high kinesthetic imagery ability group was better than other groups. Also the performance of the audiovisual imagery groups was better than the visual groups, especially the visual-low kinetic imagery ability group in the acquisition sessions(F=3/3,df=3,P=0/031),retention(F=10/385,df=3,P=0/001)and transfer(F=21/27,df=3,P=0/001)tests. These results stated that the use of audiovisual imagery based on movement sonification has resulted in skill development in combination with physical practice. Since the ability of kinetic imagery is the ability of a person to imagery in a way that creates a sense of movement in a person, also this sense of movement exists in the audiovisual, this synergy has led to the development of performance.
