Comparison of the Effectiveness of Virtual Reality and Balance Exercises on Motor Proficiency and Quality of Life in Elderly Men

Abstract
Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of virtual reality exercises and balance training on motor proficiency, quality of life, and mental health in elderly men. Considering the increasing elderly population and challenges related to physical and psychological decline, the use of modern rehabilitation technologies holds special importance.

Materials and Methods: This semi-experimental study was conducted with a pre-test, post-test, and one-month follow-up design. The sample consisted of 45 elderly men aged 65 to 75 living in Tehran who were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group performed virtual reality exercises based on Xbox and Kinect devices for 40 minutes per session, three sessions per week for 12 weeks, while the control group had no specific activity. Standard tools including motor proficiency tests, quality of life questionnaires, and psychological indices were used for data collection. Statistical analysis was conducted using descriptive methods and inferential tests.

Findings: Results showed that virtual reality and balance exercises significantly improved dynamic and static balance, enhanced quality of life in physical dimensions, individual independence, social participation, and reduced depression. Moreover, adherence and motivation were higher in the intervention group compared to the control group.

Conclusion: Virtual reality exercises, by providing a safe, multisensory, and motivating environment, can be used as a novel, cost-effective, and efficient approach in elderly rehabilitation.
