Abstract

Considering the very important effects of participation in physical activity or inactivity on physical and mental health, the present research aimed to investigate and compare health-oriented physical activity status (moderate-to-vigorous level of physical activity) and sedentary behavior among adults and the elderly. The participants included 384 adults (192 women) and 384 elderly (192 women) from Golestan province, who were selected by available sampling method. IPAQ questionnaire was used to measure health-oriented physical activity and sedentary behavior. Data were analyzed using one-sample t-test, independent t-test and chi-square. The results showed that more than half of the adults and the elderly do not participate in health-oriented physical activity. Also, women have lower health-oriented physical activity than men. In addition, both adults and the elderly have a high sedentary time, in which women have a higher sedentary time than men. Also, the elderly has lower health-oriented physical activity and higher sedentary time than adults. In general, the research results show that adopting policies and strategies to develop the participation of adults and the elderly in health-oriented physical activities is a necessity. These strategies and interventions should have a special emphasis on women. Therefore, it is necessary that the administrators, municipalities, and cultural administrations find and implement the necessary solutions to promote the participation of adults and the elderly in health-oriented physical activities, which can subsequently have positive consequences for their physical and mental health.
