Introduction:The present study aimed to investigate the effect of a moderate to intense Pilates training course on cognitive function and anxiety in women with anxiety disorders.
Methods: Thirty female participants voluntarily entered the study based on the inclusion criteria and after filling out the consent form and were randomly divided into two experimental groups (mean age 33.46 ± 7.66) and control group (mean age 30.06 ± 5.37). Participants completed the computerized Go-No Go test to measure behavioral inhibition, the Tower of London test to measure planning and problem solving, and the Beck's anxiety questionnaire before and after the intervention period. The experimental group performed Pilates exercises at an intensity of 55 to 70% of maximum heart rate for 3 sessions per week for 60 minutes for 8 weeks, and the control group did not follow the targeted exercise during this period. To analyze the data, the multivariate analysis of covariance test was used at a significance level of 0.05 was used.
Result: The results showed that a course of Pilates exercises had a significant effect on anxiety (P=0.00) and planning and problem solving (P=0.031) of the experimental group, but it did not have a significant effect on behavioral inhibition (P=0.34).
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that Pilates exercise can be included as a valuable method in treatment programs for people who are facing anxiety and cognitive problems such as planning and problem solving.
