Autistic individuals face limitations in motor learning, making modeling one of the most common methods for teaching motor skills to them. This study investigated the effectiveness of bright-dot versus video modeling on learning simple and complex motor tasks in autistic children. Twenty-eight autistic children aged 11–13 were randomly assigned to four groups: video modeling with a simple task, Point-Light Display modeling with a simple task, video modeling with a complex task, and Point-Light Display modeling with a complex task. The simple task was a fixed basketball free throw and the complex task a free throw with a step-jump; throwing accuracy was assessed using The AAHPERD Test. The protocol included a pretest (10 trials), an acquisition phase (8 blocks of 10 trials for the simple task and 12 blocks of 10 trials for the complex task), and retention and transfer tests (10 trials). During acquisition, participants observed their group’s model five times before each training block. Repeated-measures ANOVA showed significant improvement in both tasks during acquisition. In retention and transfer, no significant difference was found between Point-Light Display and video modeling in the simple task, but a significant difference emerged in the complex task, with the Point-Light Display modeling group showing better learning. Overall, the superiority of Point-Light Display modeling over video modeling in motor learning of autistic children depends on the nature of the task.
